Many couples live in different countries, work demanding jobs or simply cannot spend two weeks in Cairo waiting for paperwork. A power of attorney (tawkeel) allows a trusted lawyer in Egypt to act on your behalf — collecting certificates, filing applications and progressing your case while you remain abroad. Used correctly, it transforms a stressful trip into a short, well-planned visit.

What a POA can do

  • Submit and collect documents from embassies and government offices.
  • Arrange certified translations and Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation.
  • Book Ministry of Justice appointments and prepare the marriage file.
  • Legalize your marriage contract after the wedding and courier it abroad.
  • Represent you in divorce, custody or recognition proceedings before Egyptian courts.

What a POA usually cannot do

For a foreigner’s civil marriage at the Ministry of Justice, both partners are normally expected to attend the signing in person so the notary can confirm free consent. Marriage by proxy for foreigners is rarely accepted in practice. Think of the POA as a tool that handles everything before and after the signing — not as a replacement for being there on the day.

Types of power of attorney

General POA

A broad authorization to act on your behalf in many matters. It is convenient but grants wide powers, so we usually recommend limiting it.

Special (limited) POA

An authorization restricted to specific tasks — for example, “obtaining, translating and attesting documents for the purpose of registering a marriage”. This is the safest choice for most couples.

Litigation POA

Required for a lawyer to file and plead cases before Egyptian courts, including divorce, Khula, custody and recognition of foreign judgments.

How to sign a POA from abroad

  1. 1Receive the draft POA wording from MarryLegal, tailored to your case.
  2. 2Book an appointment at the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate, bringing your passport.
  3. 3Sign the POA before the consular officer, who certifies it.
  4. 4Alternatively, sign before a local notary, then legalize it with your country’s foreign ministry and the Egyptian consulate.
  5. 5Courier the original to our office, or ask the consulate to forward it if available.
  6. 6We register the POA in Egypt so it can be used at government offices.

A realistic remote timeline

  • Week 1: POA drafted, signed at the consulate and couriered to Cairo.
  • Week 2: POA registered; embassy certificate, translations and attestation progressed.
  • Arrival: you land with the file ready and sign at the Ministry of Justice within days.
  • After departure: contract legalized and couriered to your home address.

Revoking a POA

You can revoke a POA at any time at a notary office in Egypt or through an Egyptian consulate abroad. We also recommend including a specific purpose and expiry date, so the authorization ends automatically once your case is complete.

How MarryLegal helps

We draft precise, limited POA wording in Arabic and English, guide you through the consular appointment, register the POA in Egypt and keep you updated on WhatsApp at every step. Your case moves forward while you are at home — and you arrive to sign, not to queue.
