Marrying in Egypt as a foreigner is entirely possible and, with the right preparation, surprisingly efficient. The challenge is rarely the law itself — it is knowing which office to visit, in which order, and with which stamped and translated papers. This guide walks you through the full process at the Ministry of Justice in 2026, whether you are marrying an Egyptian citizen or another foreign national.

Where foreigner marriages are registered

Marriages involving foreigners are registered at dedicated Foreigners’ Marriage Offices of the Ministry of Justice’s Real Estate Publicity and Notarization Department (commonly called Al-Shahr Al-Aqari). In Cairo, the main office is in the downtown government district; Alexandria has its own regional office. Ordinary neighborhood marriage registrars (ma’zoun) generally cannot register a marriage where one party is a foreigner.

A marriage contract signed at this office is an official state document. Once it has been attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and legalized by your embassy, most countries will register or recognize it.

Who can marry at the Ministry

  • An Egyptian citizen and a foreign national (mixed marriage).
  • Two foreign nationals of different nationalities, depending on embassy cooperation.
  • Two foreign nationals of the same nationality — though many embassies prefer to handle these marriages at the consulate itself.

Religion matters in Egyptian family law. A Muslim man may marry a Muslim, Christian or Jewish woman. A Muslim woman marrying a non-Muslim man will typically be asked for proof that the husband has converted to Islam before the ministry will register the marriage. Marriages between two non-Muslims are generally registered according to their own personal status rules. We always clarify this during your free review so there are no surprises on the day.

The core document checklist

  1. 1Valid passport for each foreign partner, with a valid entry stamp or residency.
  2. 2Certificate of No Impediment (also called single status or freedom to marry) issued by the foreign partner’s embassy in Egypt.
  3. 3Birth certificate where requested, legalized and translated into Arabic.
  4. 4Proof that any previous marriage has ended — a final divorce decree or a death certificate — legalized and translated.
  5. 5National ID card for the Egyptian partner.
  6. 6Recent passport-size photos (usually four per person).
  7. 7Two adult male witnesses with valid identification.
  8. 8Proof of conversion, where applicable, issued by Al-Azhar.

Step-by-step: how registration works

1. Prepare and translate

Every foreign document must be translated into Arabic by a certified translator and, where it was issued abroad, legalized. Translations from unrecognized offices are frequently rejected, which is why we use approved translators only.

2. Attest at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The embassy certificate must then be attested at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication office. This stamp confirms the embassy signature is genuine and is required before the Ministry of Justice will accept it.

3. Attend the Ministry of Justice

Both partners and both witnesses attend in person. The notary reviews the file, may ask a few questions about your intentions and confirms that both parties consent freely. The contract is read, conditions are added if you have agreed any, and everyone signs.

4. Collect and legalize the contract

The certified contract is usually ready within one to a few working days. To use it abroad, it is translated, attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then legalized by your embassy or by the consulate of the country where you will register it.

Special rules worth knowing

  • Age-gap deposit: where there is a large age difference between an Egyptian woman and a foreign man (traditionally around 25 years or more), an investment certificate deposit may be required.
  • Minimum age: both partners must be at least 18 years old.
  • Visa status: tourist visa holders can often marry, but a valid entry stamp is essential. See our dedicated tourist visa guide.
  • Conditions: you can include written conditions in the contract — for example on residence, travel or work. These are discussed in our prenuptial guide.

How long does it take?

With complete documents and a cooperative embassy, the full process — embassy certificate, translations, attestation, signing and contract collection — typically takes between three and ten working days. Our express track can compress this to around 48 to 72 hours when the file is fully prepared remotely before you arrive.
