Step-by-Step: How to Legalize & Apostille Your Egyptian Marriage Certificate for Europe, the UK, US & Gulf

Your Egyptian marriage contract is only the beginning. Learn the exact legalization chain each destination country expects — and why the word “apostille” can be misleading.

After the celebration, most couples face a practical question: how do we make this marriage count back home? Whether you need to register it in Germany, apply for a UK spouse visa, update records in the United States or sponsor a spouse in the UAE, your Egyptian marriage contract must pass through a specific chain of stamps first. Get the order wrong, and the document will be rejected abroad.

The standard legalization chain

  1. 1Obtain the certified marriage contract from the Ministry of Justice.
  2. 2Request an official certified translation (usually into English) from an approved translation office.
  3. 3Authenticate the contract and translation at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation office.
  4. 4Legalize at the embassy or consulate of the destination country in Egypt.
  5. 5Register or submit the document with the authority in your home country.

Europe (EU & Schengen countries)

Most EU member states require full consular legalization by their embassy in Cairo, plus a translation into their official language. Some countries also verify Egyptian documents through their embassy before accepting them.

  • Germany: legalization by the German Embassy and translation by a sworn German translator; the registry office (Standesamt) may request additional documents.
  • France: transcription of the marriage through the French consular services, ideally prepared before the wedding.
  • Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Spain: legalization by their embassy and sworn translation; registration with the municipality or civil registry.

United Kingdom

The UK does not require foreign marriages to be registered, but you will need a legalized contract and certified English translation for spouse visa applications, name changes and other official purposes. UK Visas and Immigration checks that the marriage was legally valid in Egypt, so a Ministry of Justice registration is essential.

United States

US authorities generally accept a foreign marriage that was valid where it took place. For immigration petitions, USCIS requires the original or certified copy of the marriage contract plus a full English translation with a translator’s certificate. MoFA attestation is strongly recommended, and some states ask for additional authentication when updating records.

Gulf countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait)

Gulf states typically require legalization by their embassy in Cairo after MoFA attestation, followed by attestation at their own Ministry of Foreign Affairs once the document arrives in the country. Arabic contracts usually do not need translation, which simplifies the process.

How long does legalization take?

  • Certified translation: one to two working days.
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation: usually same day to two working days.
  • Embassy legalization: from same day to two weeks depending on the embassy.
  • International courier: three to seven days to most destinations.

Can it be done after I leave Egypt?

Yes. With a power of attorney or a signed authorization, MarryLegal can complete translation, attestation and embassy legalization after you have returned home, then courier the finished documents to you. This is one of the most popular ways couples save time during short trips.
